Traditionally, the cane sugar industry used to rely on sugar recoveries, to maximise profits. Its efforts were generally restricted to development of high recovery varieties as well as reduction of process house sugar losses.

During the last couple of seasons, we had witnessed widely varying climatic conditions which had a negative effect on the yield and and quality of sugar cane crop.

Slowly, the old schools of thought have changed and in the present days, sugarcane is viewed not only as a source for the natural sweetener, but also as a resource for fibre, energy, fertilizer, water, minerals etc.

With the efficient management and commercial tapping of such resources, the product profile of contemporary sugar units has widened drastically with the addition of electrical power, ethanol, paper, fertilizer etc., to name a few.

Thus, to be successful, modern day sugar complexes shall be smart enough to be able to smartly utilise their available resources like sugarcane, thermal as well as electrical energy, water, flue gases, by products, effluents, technical knowledge, manpower, machinery and equipment etc., since the sustainability of the industry lies in the efficient & profitable management of these resources.

With an aim to highlight the importance and further deliberate on this subject, an All India seminar on "Sustainability of Sugar Industry - Management of Resources" is convened at Pune, the sugar hub of India, jointly by National Sugar Institute, Kanpur and M/s J P Mukherji & Associates Pvt Ltd, Pune, on Thursday, 20th April 2017.
